Aquallite Data is a start-up company at the intersection of artificial intelligence, autonomy, and marine data striving to make a positive contribution to our planet.
Software Developer (Lead)
About Aquallite Data
Aquallite Data is a start-up working at the intersection of artificial intelligence, autonomy, and marine data. Our first product, Aquallite Assure™, has been developed and de-risked through a live trial with one of the world's largest offshore wind farm operators.
We were founded out of a passion for the oceans and a determination to make a positive contribution to our planet. We have big ambitions backed by real experience having previously worked together in an enterprise software company during its hypergrowth phase from £10 million to over £110 million. Our contribution was creating and launching the company's second product.
The Opportunity
We are starting a fully funded, 9-month, research and development programme to take our technology somewhere it has not been before. This means intelligent, real-time analysis and application of very large volumes of sensor data on autonomous vessel platforms.
Much of the work is inventive and ground-breaking — targeting problems not yet solved. This is a rare chance to shape a new technology from first principles and transform it into a commercial product; while laying the foundations for the growth of our organisation. You will create.
The Role
The Software Developer (Lead) owns the software engineering aspect of the programme. You will turn research into working software and then into commercial product(s). Software development for edge applications is at the heart of the role given that it must operate on an autonomous vessel. Some work also involves full-stack web development for our web-based products.
You will help direct and define our technology stack and engineering practices, working with the Chief Technology Officer. You will also work closely with the Data Scientist (Lead) and the Data Scientist, guiding their contribution into the product. To facilitate this, this role requires you to be in the office 4 days per week.
Key Responsibilities
-
Ensure adherence to software development processes, procedures and quality standards from engineering to commercial release.
-
Build the test harnesses, simulated vessel interfaces and logging needed to prove the software works as intended.
-
Build data pipelines, components that ingest, process and output high volumes of sensor data continuously; software that runs directly on computer hardware onboard autonomous vessels; and web-based products end to end, including user interfaces.
-
Help direct and define the technology stack and architecture choices, including the transition of prototype software into production-grade code.
Direction and collaboration
-
Guide the Data Scientist on product software development.
-
Work with the Data Scientist (Lead) so that algorithms are implemented faithfully, perform as intended, and can be turned into commercial product(s).
-
Work with the Chief Technology Officer on data architecture and technology strategy.
Pre-Requisite Requirements
Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field, or strong equivalent experience with at least 2 years professional experience.
Core capabilities: Proven, hands-on software development experience for enterprise applications, with full-stack web development as a key strength. Demonstrable experience with some or all of the following: Python, Typescript & Next.JS, and AWS services. Ability to implement software development processes and procedures; and a desire to provide technical leadership in the development and delivery of commercial product(s).
Successful Performance of this Role
-
Software that assures and acts on data in real time within the limitations of autonomous vessels, proven through integration and testing.
-
Survey planning taken from research into a public release product.
-
A technology stack, development processes and engineering foundation that are ready to scale into commercial product(s).
-
A Data Scientist whose software contributions are consistently of production quality.
